This app is made by CUBERFY LTD, a private limited company registered in England and Wales, company number 14613385, whose registered office is at 86-90 Paul Street, London, England, EC2A 4NE.
If you want to ask anything about your data, write to walkycub@cuberfy.com and a person will answer.
We have tried to write this in the way we would explain it to a friend. If anything here is unclear, that is our fault and we would like to know.
The short version
The dragon lives on your phone. You can use the whole app without giving us your name, your email, or anything else — no account, no sign-up, nothing.
If you would like your walking history kept safely and available on another phone, you can create an account later, whenever you feel like it, in Settings. Until you do, nothing about you leaves the device.
We do not sell anything about you to anybody, and we never will.
What the app reads from your phone
Your step count. From the phone's own health data — the same number your phone already counts for itself. It is what the dragon lives on: walking feeds it, and not walking makes it unhappy. The app asks for permission the first time it matters, not when you install it.
Your location, while you are recording a walk. If you press Start to record a walk, the app follows where you go so it can draw the line on a map. It stops the moment the walk stops. While it runs, the app keeps a line in your notification shade, so you can always see that it is happening. Apart from a walk, the only thing that ever asks where you are is Trusted devices, below, and that is off until you switch it on yourself. If you say no, everything else still works — you get the walk, the time, the steps and the coins, just no map.
Your location, when you have opened it to somebody. If you switch on Trusted devices and name people you trust, the app tells us where your phone is — including while the app is closed — so that those people can find it. While that is working, a line from the app is visible in your notification shade. The feature is off until you turn it on, and you can turn it off at any moment: collecting stops immediately and the positions already stored are deleted.
We keep no more than the last fifty positions, and we delete them when you withdraw access or delete your account.
Who sees this. The people you named yourself, and the people who run the service.
Emergency handover. We may give the last known position to emergency services, or to the authorities on a lawful request, or where there is reason to believe somebody's life is in danger. This applies only to what has already been collected with your consent.
Nothing else. No contacts, no photos, no microphone, no advertising identifier, no list of your other apps.
What happens to it
Everything is written on your phone first, and works there with no internet at all. Steps are counted, walks are recorded, the dragon is fed.
If you create an account, the app also keeps a copy for you: your walks, your step totals, and how your dragon is doing. That is what lets you open the app on a second phone and find your dragon where you left it, and what stops a lost phone meaning a lost history.
Where a walk's route is kept for you, it is encrypted, so that a copy of our records taken by somebody who should not have it does not tell them where you walk.
How long we keep it
Your walking history is kept for as long as your account exists, because it is yours and it is the reason you made one. It is not quietly deleted after a few months.
If you delete your account, all of it goes — the walks, the routes, the totals, the account itself. Not marked as deleted: gone.
You can also delete a single walk without deleting anything else. Somebody who walked somewhere they would rather not have recorded should not have to erase their whole history to remove it.
Who else sees it
Nobody, in the sense that matters: we do not sell your data, we do not share it with advertisers, and there are no advertising or analytics trackers in this app.
Two practical exceptions, and they are both about making the app work:
- Map tiles. While a walk is being recorded, the map pictures come from OpenStreetMap, a public non-profit map. Asking them for the squares of map around you tells them roughly which part of the world you are looking at. That is unavoidable in any app that shows you a real map. It happens only while you are recording.
- Whoever runs the computers for us. The service that stores your account runs on rented servers. They hold the data on our behalf and are not allowed to do anything else with it.
- People you named yourself. Only if you switched on Trusted devices, and only the people on your own list. Nobody is added to it but by you, and taking somebody off it takes effect at once.
If the company is ever sold or merged, whoever takes it on is bound by this same document until they tell you otherwise and give you the chance to leave.
Children
This app is for people aged 16 and over. It is not designed for children, we do not knowingly collect anything from a child, and if we find out we have, we delete it. If you believe a child has an account here, write to us and we will remove it.
Your choices
- Use it without an account. This is the default and it stays available.
- Turn location off. In the app or in your phone's settings. Everything except the map keeps working.
- See what we have. Ask us and we will send you a copy of everything attached to your account.
- Correct it. If something is wrong, tell us and we will fix it.
- Take it with you. Ask and we will send it in a form another app can read.
- Delete it. Either a single walk, from the app, or the whole account, which removes everything.
To do any of these, write to walkycub@cuberfy.com. We will answer within a month, and usually much sooner.
If you are in Europe or the United Kingdom
We handle your data because you asked us to — you installed a step tracker, and counting your steps is the thing it does. Where we need your permission, such as for location, we ask for it plainly and you can withdraw it at any time by turning it off.
CUBERFY LTD is the data controller — we are the company that decides what is collected and why, and the company to ask about it.
If you are in California or another US state with privacy laws
We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We do not use it to build a profile of you for anybody. You have the right to know what we hold, to have it deleted, and to have it corrected — the same list as above, and you ask for it the same way. We will not treat you differently for asking.
Changes
If we change how any of this works, we will say so in the app before the change takes effect, not afterwards in a document nobody was told about.
